Heating Our Farm Store in Minnesota

Minnesota winters can get rather cold. It isn’t uncommon to go below -20F where we live in Isanti, MN. Yet with all the farm products in our store we needed some kind of economical heater to keep things from freezing. Eventually we settled on a diesel heater. After the terrible problems TX had with the power shortage we decided to purchase a few extra just in case. That way if we lose power we can still keep the house from freezing with these portable heaters.

Diesel Heater Module

This heater is preassembled. All you need is a screw driver, a 12V battery & some diesel. (cooking oil might even work but I haven’t tried that yet) Connect up the exhaust hose using the hose clamps and route the pipe through a hole in the wall or out a window and attach the two wires to the battery. Red to the + side and the black to the - side.

This kit is great for fitting into small tight spaces like cubby holes in your camper. It also has a larger fuel tank so you don’t need to worry about it running out of fuel as often.

These diesel heaters work great for your shed, garage, or farm store. They can also be a great backup heater for your house if things get too crazy. There are a couple things you should keep in mind though. For starters, only use clean heating oil or diesel. Also it would be a good idea to order a backup fuel pump for it. Eventually, they do go bad. It helps if you avoid running it out of fuel to keep the pump from wearing out as fast. These heaters put out a crazy amount of heat! We heat our 16x24ft farm store on setting 2.4. This is almost the lowest setting this heater has.

The most important thing to remember. Unless you are in a well ventilated area be sure to run the exhaust outside!!! Otherwise it could kill you! If you don’t want to run the exhaust outside then consider getting a battery powered Carbon Monoxide alarm.
